When I run The Report King for the first time, I am told that I need to download the Microsoft.NET framework? What is it, and where do I get it?
The Microsoft.NET 2.0 framework is a free upgrade to Windows that is used by many modern Windows applications. Full instructions for downloading and installing Microsoft.NET 2.0 are available from Microsoft’s website (click here.) Once you have installed the framework you will be able to use The Report King.
When I try to install The Report King, I’m told that I need administrator privileges. What does this mean?
To install and run The Report King with a single-user licence, you need to be logged in as a user with administrator privileges. If you are using someone else’s computer, they may have created a user for you that is “limited”. Limited users cannot install The Report King.
I've just installed The Report King and I'm being asked for an activation key. Where do I get one?
Your activation key will be e-mailed to you when you purchase The Report King. We aim to deliver activation keys within two working days of ordering. In order to help protect our customers from fraud, activation keys will be sent to the e-mail address you entered when purchasing the product. If you have not received your activation key within two working days, please e-mail simon@happymongoose.co.uk to resolve the difficulty.
I've typed in my e-mail address and activation code, but I still can't access The Report King.
Make sure that you are typing in your e-mail address and code exactly as they appear in your confirmation e-mail. In particular, make sure you have not added any spaces to the code or e-mail address. Remember, you must you the e-mail address that you entered when you purchased The Report King. Your activation code will consist of groups of four letters separated by dashes. Make sure you enter the dashes as well as the letters. To make sure the code is copied perfectly, you can try copying and pasting it from the confirmation e-mail - to do this, highlight the activation code in your e-mail program, right click, and select 'Copy'; now go back to The Report King, right click on the activation code textbox, and select 'Paste'. Also make sure you have downloaded the correct version of The Report King. Activation codes between the different products cannot be swapped - for instance, an activation code for the Key Stage 2 version of the product will not work with the Foundation Stage product.
If you are still experiencing problems, check the website for help (www.happymongoose.co.uk) or e-mail simon@happymongoose.co.uk for help.
There aren't any statements in my reports.
If you are using your school's blank report format, you need to add tags to the document before The Report King can use it. These instruct The Report King where to place your report statements. Adding tags is a straightforward process; read The Report Workshop to find out more.
The program complains that it can't find any tags in my report, but I've clearly typed them in!
Firstly, from the "Your blank report" section of the wizard, double-check that you've entered the name of your adapted report, not the original report without tags.
Additionally, depending upon which version of Word you are using, you may need to ungroup any 'grouped' shapes or text boxes. You will be able to tell if a shape, or text box, belongs to a group by clicking on its border: there will (usually) be grey or green circles highlighted around its edge; you will also find that you have selected all of the other objects in the group. To ungroup these shapes, now click on "Draw" from the Drawing toolbar, and then click on "Ungroup". Continue checking through the rest of the document until there are no more groups left. Now save your document and try it again with The Report King..
The position of textboxes / tables / text has changed in my reports.
- Make sure your blank report doesn’t squeeze objects right up against the margins of your document.
- If you have text in a header of a footer, make sure that the font size you’ve selected isn’t too large - this can impact on the rest of the document.
- If you are using tables, try reducing the font size, or constraining the size of the tables so they don’t become too large and affect the rest of your document.
Some of my subjects are missing, but the tags are there!
The most likely problem here is that an invalid group has been entered for the child in the class editor (eg. an ability group that is not listed in the hint balloon for that subject.) For example, a '2c' has been entered for a strand such as Using and Applying, where the only options are w, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. When the Class Editor notices you have entered an invalid ability group for a child, it will highlight that cell in pink as a warning.
When I try to open the help file, I get the error message "Cannot open the file: mk:@MSITStore:..." or "An unexpected error has occurred." or When I click on the blue help links in the wizard, the help file won't open.

- Double click the Report King Help file.
- In the Open File-Security Warning dialog box, click to clear the Always ask before opening this file check box.

I've installed The Report King on my network, and when I run the program as administrator, it works fine. However, when other users try to use the program, the program won't work.
- Make sure you are using the latest version of The Report King.
- Make sure that the short cut in your user's policy folder is running the program in the correct directory. To check, right click on the short cut, and select "Properties". Now look at the box labelled "Start In". This should be the installation directory on your server.
- You require a site licence to run The Report King across a network.
I am using a rich text file. Some of my report statements are missing, but the tags are definitely in my blank document.
Sometimes a tag can become “split” in a rich text document, even though it appears perfectly fine your word processor. The solution is to retype your tag using the following procedure.
- Locate your cursor on the right hand side of the tag.
- Delete the tag using the backspace key.
- Re-type your tag.
Highlighting the tag and deleting or re-typing often maintains the invisible “split” in the tag.
