The Report Workshop

Welcome to the Report Workshop. This tutorial is designed to show you how to create your own reports using The Report King. The first step is to adapt your school's blank report format so that The Report King can read it. (Note: if you want to use one of The Report King's built-in report formats, you can go on to the next section.)

Do not be tempted to miss this section out if you want to produce reports using your school's report format!

Adapting your blank report

The Report King is not able to use a school's report format without some help. A school will usually distribute a word processed file to their staff, containing the school logo, some information about how to contact the school, and a layout for the teacher to fill in. The Report King can use this file to create your reports, and many different file formats are supported, including Microsoft Word documents*, text files, rich text files, HTML files and others.

However, you will need to tell the program where to write about each subject. This is done by adding simple tags to your blank report. When The Report King finds a tag, it will be replaced with the text for that subject. A tag is just the name of the subject, surrounded by two $ signs (dollar signs). For instance, when The Report King finds the tag $SCIENCE$, it is replaced with a set of statements that discuss the student's progress in science.

Before:

Science
$SCIENCE$
History

Geography

...

After:

Science
Emma produces work of a good standard, and she is currently working within national expectations in this subject. She is able to use given resources to carry out a fair test and is becoming more responsible when...
History

Geography

...

The next section will explain how to insert these tags into your blank report.

*Note: in order to work with Microsoft Word documents, you will need to have Microsoft Word 2000 (or later) installed on your machine. However, to overcome this difficulty, you can convert Word documents into Rich Text files. An explanation of how to do this is given here.
